JD Williams

The JD Williams history begins with James David Williams who started the company back in 1875. James was from Manchester in the north of England and began his selling career with 3 mobile shops. In 1882 he was recognised as the first to make use of the Post Offices' parcel post service to deliver products to customers and therefore being the innovator of the mail order business in the UK. In 1921 JD Williams became a private company.

By the 1960's business had grown and shares in JD Williams were sold to the Alliance Brothers. In 1970, the N Brown Group bought JD Williams catalogue JD Williams from the Alliance Brothers to be added to their own home shopping catalogues Ambrose Wilson and Oxendales. During the 1970's and 1980's JD Williams continued to expand in the home shopping market targeting the over 50's. A move into a younger more fashion conscious market saw the introduction of 2 new catalogue brands in the 1990's, Fashion World and Candid, appealing to the 30 to 45+ age range.

Throughout the 1990's JD Williams continued to expand into more and more markets and in 1999 they launched one of their most popular fashion based catalogues, Simply Be. Simply Be placed a bigger emphasis on plus size fashions for a younger generation. The JD Williams portfolio of home shopping catalogues continued to expand in the 21st century providing the online shopper with a wide range of products. Simply Yours and Naturally Close had a great range of lingerie, Viva La Diva looked after the footwear market, Premier Man and Jacamo catered for men's fashion and The Brilliant Gift Shop had a large range of gifts and toys.

JD Williams also purchased House of Bath, Gray and Osbourn and more recently High and Mighty.
